Web Resources for New Photographers

December 27, 2009

I’ll bet there are a lot of new DSLR owners after this December 25th. This is a great time to be a beginning photographer. Not only can good equipment be found relatively inexpensively, but there are thousands of photo references on the web to help you learn about that shiny new camera. There are also numerous opportunities to attend classes, seminars and workshops led by some of the best photographers in the world. Here is a short list of online resources to help get you started…

DPexperience.com This website features articles and tutorials about many aspects of digital photography and a great podcast. New articles are posted daily, and you can send in questions to be answered on the bi-monthly podcast.

Rick Sammon Rick is a great teacher and a really nice guy. His blog is regularly updated with technical and creative tips. His books are great too… all 34 of them!

Photo.net The “Learn” section at Photo.net is a great collection of articles about photography basics.

DoubleExposure.com This is a great article by Rick Sammon about seeing light for better exposures.

Kelby Training This video training site has videos about photography, Adobe software and much more.

flickr.com This may seem obvious, but sharing your images is a good thing. Flickr is one of many sites that let’s you upload images and interact with other photographers for free.

flickr TIP: Join flickr groups that relate to you and your images. Groups are a great way to get your photos out there and get feedback from other group members.

Twitter.com Look up your favorite photographers on this social networking site and you’ll be treated to more information than you can imagine. It takes a minute to get the hang of it, but I’m sure you’ll be tweeting and connecting in no time.

Photofocus.com Lot’s of articles here too. Beginning photographers will probably get the most out of the articles under the “Tips” category.

Edge of the World Workshops I can’t let you go without a little plug… Our spring workshop in Costa Rica is geared toward the new photographer. We will focus on photography basic skills and processing images with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. You’ll learn how to use your new camera through classroom instruction and by using your camera in beautiful shooting locations along the beaches of Mal Pais/ Santa Teresa Costa Rica.

Congratulations on your new hobby, and we hope you get the “bug” as bad as we have it! Please email us if you have any questions.
